Claysburg-Kimmel School District mulls changing transportation firms
District agrees to advertise for 5-year contract

CLAYSBURG -- Members of the Claysburg-Kimmel School Board agreed to advertise a request for proposals for transportation services for a five-year contract at Wednesday's meeting.
According to Board President Jeremy Knott, the transportation contract with Triple J Bus Company was one of the district's most expensive line items included in the 2026-27 budget.
Talks of switching transportation companies began in April 2026 during the board's preliminary budget discussions.
"What's the harm in us opening it (transportation options) up?" Knott asked during the meeting.
Board member Joseph Musselman was fine with looking into other transportation companies. Member Danny Potter suggested a five-year contract.
During the discussion, Knott said choosing the lowest bidder doesn't mean they're the best fit for the district, adding that there's value in the services they've received from their current provider.
"A transition could mean a lot," he said. "It could hurt a lot, so I think all those things need to be taken into consideration."
Business manager Dena Burket said she was concerned about busing software that mainly picks routes. It's a feature some districts provide, but they do not, and they may have to purchase it given a new transportation contract.
Burket said the earliest request for proposal advertisement can be submitted to the Mirror by Aug. 17, with proposals due to the business office by Aug. 31. The board would vote during the scheduled Sept. 9 meeting.
Their next meeting is slated for 7 p.m. Aug. 19.
