A Chambersburg man is accused of raping a woman in an incident that left her with about 45 bite marks across her body.
Charles Andrew Hicks III, 34, was arraigned Thursday by Magisterial District Judge Matthew Dunio on single felony counts of rape, sexual assault and strangulation, as well as two misdemeanor counts of indecent assault and single misdemeanor counts of simple assault, false imprisonment and criminal mischief. He remains free on $250,000 unsecured bail.
Logan Township police began their investigation into the incident Feb. 15 after state police at Huntingdon alerted them to a possible sexual assault that allegedly occurred in a room at the Hampton Inn at 180 Charlotte Drive, Altoona. Officers were told by state police that the victim was at Penn Highlands Huntingdon, where she reported being sexually assaulted and raped by Hicks, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Records from the victim's visit to the hospital stated she and Hicks had consensual sex, but when she looked through his phone, she found he had been cheating on her with several other women. An argument began, during which the victim told Hicks she was leaving, and Hicks threw the victim off the bed and began raping her. The victim later told police that Hicks had pulled off her birth control patch before the rape because he wanted to get her pregnant so she couldn't leave him, the police report states.
The victim said Hicks bit her multiple times across her body during the assault and a subsequent examination revealed about 45 bite marks, the report states.
In an interview, the victim told officers that during the incident, Hicks ripped her shirt, punched her in the head, pulled a chunk of her hair out and put his hand over her mouth and nose so she couldn't breathe. The victim said she kicked Hicks once or twice in the face to try to get him off of her and that she thought Hicks would kill her, the report states.
A search warrant executed on the hotel room in which the incident allegedly occurred yielded three bath towels, three bedsheets and a hand towel containing blood and two pillow cases containing blood and hair. Officers also noted a smashed picture frame, what appeared to be pieces of a broken cellphone, a dent in a wall, a broken door handle and blood smeared on the door, according to the affidavit.
Hicks is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Sept. 17 in front of Dunio.
