BELLWOOD -- Members of the Bellwood-Antis School Board unanimously approved changes to district handbooks, including student-approved and prohibited artificial intelligence tools.
According to the updated middle school handbook, students are prohibited from submitting generated work as their own without teacher permission, generating inappropriate content and harassing students and staff.
Changes made in the high school handbook include the addition of Generative AI in the academic integrity policy and approved and prohibited uses of AI in school.
Superintendent Edward DiSabato said after the meeting that the district's AI policies are a work in progress, as the technology is rapidly evolving.
Most of the district's AI policies are new and still developing, he said, and the board will evaluate them moving forward.
"AI is here to stay," he said. "We want to educate our kids properly and use it efficiently to enhance education."
In other news, the board unanimously approved the settlement and release agreement with Bishop McCort Catholic Academy.
This approval follows Bishop McCort's decision in February to file a federal lawsuit against the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference for religious discrimination against 19 area public schools.
