Six occupants of a horse and buggy were transported to area hospitals Sunday evening after being rear-ended by another vehicle, according to a state police report.
The accident occurred in Bedford County about 5:47 p.m. as the 79-year-old driver of a silver 2020 Hyundai Elantra was traveling south on William Penn Road south of Younts Road in East Saint Clair Township. The driver struck the rear of a horse and buggy, causing the horse and buggy to strike a guard rail and overturn. All six occupants of the buggy were ejected, the report states.
The driver of the Elantra told officers that the sun was in her eyes immediately before the crash. She was then transported to Nason Hospital for further evaluation, the report states.
The buggy's occupants were also evaluated by emergency services personnel, with some being transported by helicopter and others being transported by ambulance to area hospitals for further evaluation and treatment.
Officers were joined on scene by Bedford Volunteer Fire Department, Bedford EMS, Chestnut Ridge EMS, Southern Cove EMS, PennDOT, state police Forensic Services Unit and state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad.
