Work to cause lengthy delays in East Freedom

Lane restrictions and lengthy delays on Dunnings Highway and Everett Road in East Freedom will begin July 27 as part of the I-99 Sproul/Claysburg to Newry improvement project.

On Monday, July 27, contractors will begin bridge painting operations on the I-99/U.S. 220 bridge over Dunnings Highway and Everett Road, with traffic on both Dunnings Highway and Everett Road under lane restrictions and standard flagging operations between Johnstown Road and Mountain Road in East Freedom.

Drivers should expect lengthy delays -- some as long at 15 minutes -- between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday near the bridge.

Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc., State College, is the lead contractor of the 23.02-mile, $23.9 million project, which includes overlay paving, the rehabilitation of seven dual bridges (four during the 2026 construction season) and the Exit 23 (Roaring Spring/Portage) bridge over I-99 and the installation of five intelligent transportation system dynamic message boards in Allegheny, Blair, Freedom and Greenfield townships in Blair County.

The overall project is scheduled for completion in June 2028.

Dunnings Highway plans under development

PennDOT is developing plans for the Dunnings Highway Bridge Rehabilitation Project in the summer of 2028. Carrying Dunnings Highway over Beaverdam Creek, the bridge is located in Greenfield Township.

During construction, traffic will be maintained on Dunnings Highway by way of a single-lane controlled by a temporary traffic signal. Oakdale Road near the bridge will be closed as part of the project with traffic detoured using Dunnings Highway/Old US 220 and Bedford Street to Sproul.

A public plans display meeting for the project will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the Greenfield Township Municipal Building, 477 Ski Gap Road, Claysburg. The plans display will be conducted in an open house format. The public is welcome to attend anytime during meeting hours.
