Chernisky Classic event raises $11K for Cambria County Regional Firefighters Association

Proceeds donated to Cambria firefighters group

EBENSBURG -- More than $11,000 was donated to the Cambria County Regional Firefighters Association thanks to the 12th annual Chernisky Classic, which took place a few weeks ago on the Ghost Town Trail.

Cambria County Commissioner Tom Chernisky presented the check for $11,248 to fire school leaders during the association's annual convention, which was held Friday at the Adams Township Volunteer Company in Saint Michael.

The event's proceeds help keep the association's fire school training site in East Carroll Township up to the best standard every year, association President Josh Petrisko said. The money is used to purchase equipment and resources first responders need to maintain the site.

The fire school is used by about 80 fire departments throughout a 10-county region, including Bedford, Blair and Huntingdon.

Supporting the fire school strengthens public safety, supports the local economy and helps build the next generation of first responders, Chernisky said, adding the event shows what can happen when volunteers, sponsors, participants and community members come together to make a difference.

"Training saves lives and property," Chernisky said. "When an emergency happens, we all want first responders to have the best training and the right equipment to protect lives, property and each other."
