Blair County issues disaster declaration for Tyrone Borough, Snyder Township after flooding

County issues declaration in wake of flooding

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Blair County commissioners on Thursday issued a disaster declaration for Tyrone Borough and Snyder Township in light of damage caused by Sunday’s rainstorm and flooding.

The declaration is one of several steps that must be completed before property owners are in a position to pursue state and federal emergency disaster funds that may be available to offset losses.

The declaration may also extend into other municipalities, depending on damage information that commissioners Chairman Dave Kessling said is still being collected as of Thursday.

The storm that moved through the Tyrone area on Sunday afternoon was reported to have generated three inches of rain within an hour, prompting small streams to overflow and damage at least two dozen residences in Tyrone, including a duplex where the foundation collapsed.

The storm and flooding also carried dirt into the bottom of the community pool, requiring it to be drained. It also downed trees and damaged pavilions at Reservoir Park.

Property owners with storm damage and storm-related damage are encouraged to file reports with their local governments and emergency management personnel.
