Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art marks milestone with Golden Gala
Golden Gala commemorates 50 years of museum’s impact
The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art will be shining bright June 13 with its Golden Gala commemorating 50 years of the museum’s artistic impact on the region.
Starting at 6 p.m., guests at the Scotch Valley Country Club, 18 Clubhouse Drive, Hollidaysburg, can enjoy a night of dining, drinks and dancing, Altoona site Director Jodi Peachey said.
Interactive experiences, such as casino tables, caricature drawings, face paintings and auctions will also be offered that night.
Peachey said all proceeds will go toward SAMA’s exhibitions and educational programs, community events and continued operation of the museum’s four locations.
“By attending, guests help ensure that SAMA can continue bringing art, culture and educational opportunities to the communities it serves,” she said.
SAMA founder Michael Strueber said that the museum had humble beginnings, as many art institutions are started with a permanent collection and a healthy endowment.
SAMA started with 53 permanent pieces.
“We started with a commitment to serve the people,” he said.
Over the past 50 years, he said the museum made considerable gains, noting its national accreditation, which only a few museums in the country receive. They also grew their collection to 7,000 pieces.
However, he said the museums have faced many challenges over the years, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are thriving, but it never has been easy,” he said. “Every year, it’s a different challenge.”
With the celebration slated for June 13, Strueber said gold will be everywhere at Scotch Valley with decorations, champagne bottles and even a “best dressed in gold” contest.
Live and silent auctions will feature anniversary-
inspired destination packages with trips to Palm Beach, Italy and the Blue Ridge Mountains, Peachey said. Additional auction items, such as gift certificates, gift baskets, jewelry and artwork will be available, along with unique contributions by local artists Strueber, Kevin Kutz, Barb Hollander, Helen Gorsuch and others.
Peachey said those interested have a chance to celebrate the 50 remarkable years behind the museum.
“Join us as we celebrate the past, honor the present, and raise a glass to the next 50 years of art, culture, creativity and community,” she said.
