Logan Township supervisors urge fireworks restraint

Metro

Members of the Logan Township Board of Supervisors Thursday advised residents to use fireworks around the Fourth of July legally and courteously.

Township code prohibits setting off fireworks between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.; within 150 feet of a building that’s typically occupied; on any township property; on any private property without the owner’s permission; when under the influence of alcohol; from a motor vehicle or at or into a motor vehicle or from a building.

Consideration should also lead people not to use fireworks in a way that would disturb or annoy people with Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, including combat veterans with that condition; or in a way that would frighten small children and pets, according to Supervisor Ed Frontino.

Vietnam veteran and Supervisor Ron Heller and his wife typically drive to a relative’s farm on the evening of July 4 to escape the noise, said Heller, who has been diagnosed with PTSD.

If there’s any chance of causing hardship with neighbors, residents should discuss it first with those neighbors, Frontino suggested.

For most people, watching a public fireworks display might suffice, Frontino suggested.

“I’m not saying don’t celebrate,” Frontino said. “(But) use common sense.”

Job request denied

The supervisors did not approve a request from police detective Jason Beiler to accept a secondary job as a county deputy coroner.

After separating out the resolution on whether to approve Beiler’s request from several other resolutions up for approval, Frontino said he considered Beiler “a great guy,” but that “too many things could go wrong” with his proposed side work.

Chairman Jim Patterson said no, also, adding that township officers earn good wages and the expectation is that township interests would come first in terms of workplace priority.

Supervisor Wes Barnhart said he also planned to vote no, adding that he doesn’t have an issue with all secondary jobs, but does with the one that Beiler proposed.

Supervisor Ron Heller said he had no comment.

The proposal died for lack of a motion.
