Porch fire damages city house

A fire in a space between the underside of the second floor porch and the ceiling of the first floor porch at the rear of an apartment house on the 2200 block of Broad Avenue on Tuesday afternoon caused about $400 in damage, according to city Fire Chief Adam Free.

The fire was called in as a dwelling fire with possible entrapment.

A resident of the apartment house suppressed the blaze with a fire extinguisher, then firefighters finished the job after running a hose to the back of the apartment house, according to Free and city police officer Christy Wasser.

Fire inspector Justin Smithmyer was investigating, but the fire appeared to be accidental, possibly caused by discarded smoking material, Free said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
