Municipalities will get Blair liquid fuel dollars that county failed to spend

Region will share $887,000 that county failed to spend

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Blair County municipalities will share $887,288 in liquid fuel dollars that the county failed to spend in 2021 and 2023.

Commissioners Dave Kessling and Laura Burke during a meeting on May 14, authorized the distribution that the state requires when the county doesn’t spend its annual allocation. The state, which collects what’s referred to as liquid fuel dollars gas tax revenues, requires counties to spend the allocation on road and bridge maintenance or related eligible purposes.

Chief Clerk Alicia Tiracave told the Mirror in an email on Thursday that the $887,288 was earmarked for construction of a salt shed at the county’s highway yard on West Loop Road. But that project — which moved forward in 2025 with the awarding of contracts — lagged in 2021 and 2023 when the liquid fuel dollars earmarked for the project weren’t spent and when they weren’t used for any other eligible expense.

Tiracave advised that the county is distributing $478,634 in 2021 funds and $408,654 from its 2023 allocation, totaling $887,288.

The distribution will be a bonus for local municipalities which typically use their liquid fuel dollars toward road and bridge maintenance work that often stretches into the summer. The state has a formula — reflecting mileage and population factors — which determines how much each municipality can receive from the county’s forced distribution.

Based on that formula, the City of Altoona gets the largest portion, at $272,120, and Logan Township gets the next-to-largest amount, at $92,801.

Other distributions are as follows: Allegheny Township, $49,480; Antis Township, $52,589; Blair Township, $31,160; Catharine Township, $9,905, Frankstown Township, $63,056; Freedom Township, $26,067; Greenfield Township, $28,049; Huston Township, $15,122; Juniata Township, $11,048; Taylor Township, $21,458; Tyrone Township, $18,326; Woodbury Township, $24,355; Bellwood, $11,828; Duncansville, $8,564; Hollidaysburg, $34,249; Martinsburg, $11,501; Newry, $1,530; Roaring Spring, $14,490; North Woodbury Township, $21,679; Snyder Township, $29,504; Tyrone Borough, $31,916 and Williamsburg Borough, $7,300.
