ASO narrows search for new director

The Altoona Symphony Orchestra has narrowed down its music director search to four potential candidates who will create their own program and conduct the orchestra in front of a live audience during its 98th season.

According to Executive Director Amanda Selvenis, two candidates will present their programs in the fall, and the remaining two will perform in the spring. The chosen candidate will be announced at the end of the season.

This search follows current Music Director Nick Palmer’s decision to step down, concluding his 30-year run as conductor of the ASO.

Selvenis said they’re looking for someone to bring a new vision to the orchestra, as they currently have enough momentum to ring in its 100th season.

“I want to consider new perspectives because it’s something new for everyone,” she said.

ASO formed a search committee in January 2026 after Palmer informed them about his departure in early fall 2025, board of directors President Rick Ayers said.

The committee has been very busy since then, reviewing applications, conducting interviews and applying a rigorous process to determine finalists.

He said they didn’t want to transition conductors during their 100th season, so having auditions during the 98th season and celebrating the conductor’s inaugural season during 99 will give the artist enough experience to celebrate the symphony’s 100th season.

Some criteria the committee is looking for include living within a 300-mile radius, musicship and artistic authority and audience engagement with community connection, as conductors are the most effective ambassadors when it comes to raising philanthropic funds in the community.

“Regardless if they live in Altoona, they need to connect with the people of Altoona,” he said.

As a result, the candidate’s outlook will heavily rely on community feedback, he said, as residents will have an opportunity to provide feedback, and stakeholders will also be able to interact with candidates.

Ayers said he’s confident that ASO will find their desired candidate amongst their four finalists, mentioning that they’re outstanding artists who can take on the influential role.

“We are hoping to find someone like Nick (Palmer) who will fit with the Altoona community and inspire members of the Altoona community in supporting the arts for years to come,” he said.

The ASO will release candidate information soon.
