Altoona teen arrested in robbery at convenience store
Bingham, 15, allegedly threatened to kill cashier, family
A city teen is being tried as an adult after allegedly threatening to kill a cashier and their family while robbing a convenience store.
Kingston Kyler Bingham, 15, was arraigned April 5 by Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio on two felony counts of robbery and single misdemeanor counts of simple assault, making terroristic threats, theft, receiving stolen property, disorderly conduct and possession of an instrument of crime with intent. He also faces a summary count of criminal mischief.
Bingham was remanded to the Blair County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.
Altoona police were dispatched about 1:19 p.m. on Sunday, April 5, to FeFi’s Grocery Store at 210 Fourth St. for a reported robbery in progress. While en route, Blair County dispatch told officers the suspect, later identified as Bingham, had fled the scene. Officers were then flagged down by an individual in the area of Eighth Street and Fifth Avenue, who claimed they were holding Bingham. At FeFi’s, the cashier and other witnesses told officers that Bingham had entered the store with a brick, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
The witnesses said Bingham slammed the brick onto the counter and demanded that the cashier give him all of the money in the register. The cashier told Bingham the money was locked in a lockbox and Bingham became irate, slamming the brick into the checkout monitor and a TV screen. Bingham then threatened to kill the cashier and his family if he wasn’t given the money, the police report states.
The cashier said he gave Bingham about $529 in cash and Bingham fled the store. A witness in the store chased Bingham and was able to catch up to him and secure the stolen money. The witness then returned the money to the store, the report states.
Officers corroborated the witness’ and cashier’s accounts by watching the store’s surveillance footage. They estimated Bingham caused about $200 in damage to the store. The brick used by Bingham was also located and identified by the cashier, the report states.
When officers contacted the Blair County Juvenile Probation Officer, they were advised Bingham would not be placed at that time, according to the affidavit.
Bingham is scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 15 in front of DeAntonio.
