A bridge on Wopsononock Avenue over Spring Run has been renamed the Private First Class James A. Behe Memorial Bridge.

“Private First Class James Behe exemplified a life of service, dedication and honor,” state Sen. Judy Ward, R-Blair, said in a news release. “This designation serves to honor that legacy and ensure that it is remembered.”

Behe was a member of the Army’s 80th Infantry Division. In September 1944, while serving his country, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Stalag VII-A in Moosburg, Germany, until April 1945, when he was liberated by the 101st Airborne Band of Brothers.

He was awarded the EAME Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars for Gallantry, Rhineland Campaign, Northern France Campaign, Army Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, WWII Victory Medal, POW Medal and a Purple Heart.

He was discharged from the Army in September 1945 and returned to civilian life, starting his own business, Behe Brothers Plumbing and Heating in Altoona.

“My dad’s service to our country had a big impact on our family, and we are proud of his service,” said Dave Behe. “We are honored to have this bridge named in his honor. My dad earned every letter on that sign.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
