Two residents were rescued from a Tuesday morning structure fire along the 800 block of Magee Road in East Carroll Township, Patton.
The call came in shortly after 9:30 a.m. for a garage fire in the basement of the home.
According to Patton assistant fire Chief Jerry Brant, a firefighter from a neighboring company happened to be in the area and reached the scene before other departments arrived. That firefighter assisted two individuals in exiting the home and they were transported to UPMC Altoona for treatment.
The fire moved from the basement garage to the first floor before being quickly knocked down by firefighters within 20 minutes, Brant said. Smoke and heat damage were reported throughout the second floor of the home, he added.
Brant said seven cats also survived the fire, with some requiring resuscitation by fire and EMS personnel. While six of the cats were accounted for, the seventh remains loose in the neighborhood, he said.
The Patton Fire Company stayed on scene for two hours as firefighters cleared the home.
A state fire marshal has been called in to investigate, Brant said, noting that the fire didn’t appear to be suspicious.
In addition to Patton, Carrolltown and Hope fire companies assisted on scene, along with the Hastings Area and John Carroll Area ambulance services.
