More charges pending for Altoona man who pleaded guilty to child porn counts

Gaines allegedly threatened victim while awaiting sentencing

A city man who pleaded guilty to three felony counts of child pornography is back behind bars with bail denied after allegedly threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend.

Hasan Elwood Gaines, 25, was arraigned Saturday by Magisterial District Judge Andrew L. Blattenberger on felony counts of disseminating child sexual abuse materials and corruption of minors, as well as misdemeanor counts of unlawful dissemination of intimate image, making terroristic threats and harassment.

Gaines was remanded to the Blair County Prison with bail denied as “no amount of bail or set of conditions can ensure the safety of the public,” according to online court documents.

The charges were brought after the victim contacted Altoona police about 9:39 p.m. Friday to report receiving threatening messages from Gaines, her ex-boyfriend, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

The victim told officers Gaines had been sending her messages over Instagram saying he was going to “kill” her. When the victim blocked him, Gaines began messaging her mother with the same threats, the police report states.

The victim’s mother told officers that Gaines began calling her and threatening the victim and the victim’s family. Gaines called the victim’s mother another nine times before officers arrived at her residence. In messages also sent to the victim’s mother, Gaines said the victim “owes money” and that he’s “going to kill (the victim) when I see her and everybody she’s with,” the report states.

Gaines sent the victim’s mother a video of the victim engaged in sexual activity with Gaines. The victim told officers the video was filmed two years ago, when she was underage. At that point, Gaines began trying to contact the victim again, but she ignored his calls out of fear, the report states.

Gaines is scheduled for a preliminary hearing March 18 in front of Magisterial District Judge Benjamin F. Jones.

Gaines was taken into custody in a similar case in January 2025, after beginning a relationship with a 16-year-old juvenile female. Throughout their relationship, Gaines filmed several sexual encounters with the victim and, on Jan. 3, officers received a tip that Gaines had posted the sexual encounters to fake Facebook and Instagram accounts. During a search for electronic evidence at Gaines’ residence, officers found items consistent with a drug selling operation, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

In the sex abuse case, Gaines pleaded guilty to three felony counts of child pornography in January 2026 and is awaiting sentencing. Seven felony counts of sexual abuse of children, two felony counts of unlawful contact with a minor, single felony counts of disseminating child sexual abuse material and corruption of minors, as well as a misdemeanor count of unlawful dissemination of an intimate image, were dismissed, online court documents state.

A separate docket was filed for Gaines’s drug charges, in which he pleaded guilty to a single felony count of possession with intent to deliver in exchange for five months’ probation. An additional felony count of possession with intent to deliver and misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia were dismissed.
