Blair County Planning Commission rejects surface water withdrawal plan

Blair planners deny proposal to take up to 216K gallons per day

Blair County Planning Commission members Thursday rejected a surface water withdrawal plan submitted by New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. Inc.

On Dec. 11, NES&L filed an application with the Susquehanna River Basin Commission for a surface water withdrawal and a minor modification to a current SRBC approval.

According to a letter from Stephanie Stewart of NES&L, the company has requested to withdraw up to 216,000 gallons per day from Logan Run and add Logan Spring as a source of water for consumptive use at a location on the NES&L Tyrone Forge Quarry property in Warriors Mark Township, Huntingdon County, and Snyder Township, Blair County.

The water will be used by NES&L for quarry plant operations, according to the letter.

Planning commission members aren’t sure if this project is consistent with the Alleghenies Ahead comprehensive plan.

“It is not consistent with the comprehensive plan,” said board member Peter Folen.

“We flag these (kinds of projects); it may not be consistent and may have a lasting impact on the drinking water. The municipality and DEP can say it is safe and move forward, but DEP will flag it and do additional investigations,” said Regional Planner MacKenzie Caron.

Snyder Township Supervisor Jim Burket wants to see additional information.

“There should be more homework done on this; that is a lot of water they will take away. I would like to understand more about it,” Burket said.
