Blair County District Attorney urged to provide discovery to defense in OD death case

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Blair County District Attorney’s Office was urged Thursday to provide “any and all” discovery to the defense in the case of a city man accused of providing the drugs that led to the overdose death of 40-year-old Christy Clifford in April 2025.

Danny Lee Caldwell Jr., 37, is facing single felony counts of drug delivery resulting in death, possession with intent to deliver and criminal use of a communication facility, as well as single misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He remains in custody at the Blair County Prison in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Caldwell appeared in Blair County court for a trial list review hearing alongside Chief Public Defender Julia Burke.

Burke told presiding President Judge Wade A. Kagarise that she had filed a motion to compel discovery that morning, in which she asked for the forensic extraction of Clifford’s and the alleged drug dealer’s cellphones, as well as Clifford’s medical records.

“The cellphone records will show the substances were obtained not from Danny Caldwell, but from others,” Burke said.

Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Thomas confirmed the location of one of the items Burke requested, telling Kagarise that Altoona police had the forensic extraction and could get it to Burke on Friday. As for the medical records, Thomas said the DA’s Office “can certainly attempt to get them.”

Burke requested Clifford’s medical records, as she had blood work and a urine analysis performed about three days before her overdose death.

“I do believe those records are material,” Burke said.

When Kagarise asked Burke about a potential resolution to the case, Burke said “there was an offer made.”

“I anticipate we are going to trial in this case,” Burke said.

Kagarise cautioned Burke and Thomas that Caldwell’s case was approaching a year old and urged the DA’s Office to “provide any and all discovery to the defense forthwith.”

Kagarise then scheduled Caldwell’s case for jury selection on May 18.

Caldwell is accused of providing the drugs that led to the overdose death of Christy Clifford. During their investigation, police traced the drugs Clifford overdosed on to Caldwell, the police report states.

On April 24, 2025, police learned that Clifford was in the ICU at UPMC Altoona with an anoxic brain injury. She was pronounced brain dead on April 26, according to the report.

An autopsy conducted by Mount Nittany Medical Center on April 29 listed the cause of death as multidrug overdose due to methamphetamine, fentanyl and xylazine.
