Altoona woman accused of hatchet attack

Yarnell allegedly hit man while he was sleeping

A city woman is behind bars with bail denied after allegedly attacking a man with a hatchet while he slept.

Carrie Nicole Yarnell, 27, was arraigned Tuesday by Magisterial District Judge Kevin Stoltz on two felony counts of aggravated assault as well as a single misdemeanor count of simple assault and summary harassment.

Online court documents state Yarnell was remanded to the Blair County Prison with bail denied for “public safety.”

State police at Hollidaysburg were dispatched about 4:37 a.m. Tuesday to a residence along Cherry Avenue in Antis Township, Tyrone, for a report of an assault. On scene, officers interviewed the victim, who said Yarnell hit him over the head with a hatchet while he was sleeping, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

The victim told officers that Yarnell then took his vehicle to Penn Highlands Tyrone for a mental health evaluation, the police report states.

At the hospital, medical staff told officers that Yarnell had checked herself in and was reporting being sexually assaulted by the victim. Yarnell declined to be interviewed by police without an attorney present, the report states.

Yarnell is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in front of Stoltz on March 24.
