At a committee of the whole meeting on Monday night, Spring Cove School Board members further deliberated on resurfacing the Central High School running track.

The project would cost the district $230,000 but last about 10 years.

A potential contractor told Supervisor Aaron Barnes that the track “needs to be resurfaced, and if you don’t, you’ll be in the same position (as) 10 years ago,” Superintendent Betsy Baker said, referring to a previous situation where the district spent more money after waiting too long to resurface the track.

They will continue talks about resurfacing the track, she said.

Recalling previous discussions at last week’s meeting about updating all high school track and field facilities, Baker said the district is going with a multi-year plan to move middle school students to the high school building with an addition for at least $69 million.

“We need to put more money into that (project),” Baker said, adding that the board will hear from a bond councilor next week who will explain money-saving options for their upcoming projects.

The board will continue project discussions into next week’s voting meeting, she said.

In other news, the board is waiting for a response from Beard Legal Group about the changes the finance and legal committee made to the social media policy last week.

The committee’s next meeting is slated for April 20, when they will discuss cyberbullying and bullying policies.

Board members will also decide next week whether to approve a public school facility improvement grant resolution, which will be used to make updates within Martinsburg Elementary, including window replacements and health and safety upgrades.

The grant will fund 75% of the project and the district will provide the remaining 25%. After board approval, Baker said they will submit the grant application, which is due in March.
