An inmate at SCI Houtzdale was found unresponsive in his cell and later pronounced dead, according to a news release from the prison.

Edward J. Bower Jr., 31, died Thursday despite life-saving measures by members of the Unit Team, the report states.

Bower was serving a 7-to-14-year sentence after being convicted of arson in Lycoming County. He arrived at SCI Houtzdale on Sept. 25, 2025.

In accordance with state policy, state police were notified and will conduct an investigation.

The deceased’s next-of-kin has been notified.
