Altoona man charged with crashing stolen vehicle while fleeing police
Rabenstein held on $25,000 bail
A city man is behind bars after allegedly driving and crashing a stolen vehicle while fleeing police.
Nathan Allen Rabenstein, 21, was arraigned Tuesday before Magisterial District Judge Kevin Stoltz on felony charges of receiving stolen property and fleeing police, along with misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, and 10 summary traffic violations.
His bail was set at $25,000 straight and he was remanded to the Blair County Prison.
About 5:41 p.m. Monday, Altoona police saw a 2010 silver Hyundai Veracruz that was known to have been stolen overnight from East Third Avenue.
When an officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver, later identified as Rabenstein, fled from police on Willow Avenue near Fourth Street. The vehicle continued to Chestnut Avenue, where it crossed the median into oncoming traffic before crashing into a fence near Union Tank.
During a search incident to arrest, police found two bags of methamphetamine and two prescription pills on Rabenstein.
Other paraphernalia was also found in the vehicle, police reported, noting Rabenstein was found to be a suspended driver.
The registration plate had been changed and police found the proper registration plate inside the vehicle, the report states.
Rabenstein’s preliminary hearing is Feb. 25 before Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio.
