Saint Francis responds to store closure reports

‘Physical retail presence’ to remain during online transition

LORETTO — Saint Francis University officials have responded to an article in Tuesday’s Mirror, stating the university will continue to maintain “a physical retail presence” on campus while transitioning to a new online bookstore provider.

In December, the Mirror received a news tip that suggested university officials had plans to close the campus’ bookstore in May. A bookstore employee confirmed the information Monday, noting employees were told their services wouldn’t be needed once the university’s contract with Barnes & Noble Education expires in May.

In a statement, university officials said information suggesting that the campus bookstore is closing is not accurate.

“Saint Francis University chose not to renew its current bookstore agreement to better deliver affordable, flexible options for students,” the statement reads. “The university will continue to maintain a physical retail presence on campus while transitioning to a new online bookstore provider to enhance affordability and access for students, alumni and community members.”

According to the statement, the university does not comment on individual employee matters.

However, university officials said the bookstore, and all other campus services, will remain staffed by university personnel or approved partners.
