Food grants awarded to local nonprofits

The Tyrone Area Food Bank received $10,370 from the Food Recovery Infrastructure Grant Program to help the organization safely provide food for those in need.

The grant funds can be used toward the cost of equipment to reduce food waste disposal from food retailers, wholesalers, agriculture organizations, farms and cooperatives (such as grocery stores) by repurposing and redistributing apparently safe and wholesome foods to nonprofits that provide food to the public.

Other Blair County grant recipients were the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, receiving $48,804, and The Hope Center, $27,995.

In Centre County, Commonfood Inc. received $34,715, while Faithcentre Inc. received $29,672 and the Greater Buffalo Run Valley United Methodist Church received $7,936.

The food recovery program “is all about getting good, fresh food to the Pennsylvanians who need it most instead of going to waste in landfills,” DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley said in a statement.

Grants up to $50,000 were available per applicant.

Starting at $2.99/week.
