Salvation Army offers daily daylight warming center

Salvation Army to host shelter through February

Beginning today, Jan. 6, and every day through the end of February, the Salvation Army at 1813 Sixth Ave. in Altoona will become a daylight warming center from 9 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to Major Christopher Blessing.

In extreme weather, the warming center will dispense with the afternoon break — remaining open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The decision on whether to dispense with the afternoon break will be announced on the Salvation Army’s communication networks.

Attendees will receive hot beverages during their stays and free dinners at 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Showers and laundry services will be available, first-come, first-served, until “the time sheet is filled.”

Winter clothing and other winter items will be available as needed by guests.

The Salvation Army team will be going out during severe weather “to survey the area for those in need” of the warming center, according to a Salvation Army news release.

“We’re just trying to bless the community and honor the donations we get,” Blessing said Monday afternoon.

The organization plans to open its facility as a cooling center “in the heat of the summer,” Blessing said.

For more information or to volunteer to work at the center or to prepare a meal or donate goods or money, call 814-600-9120.

Mirror Staff Writer William Kibler is at 814-949-7038.

Starting at $2.99/week.
