PA Potato Chip Manufacturing LLC’s Berlin plant to shutter

PA Potato Chip Manufacturing LLC’s plant in Berlin, known locally as the Snyder of Berlin plant, will begin closing operations in February, according to a WARN notice posted by the state Department of Labor and Industry.

The longtime Somerset County potato chip company has 96 employees. Shuttering operations will begin Feb. 13, 2026, and be complete by the end of the year, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice dated Wednesday, Dec. 3.

According to officials, most of the employees will be laid off by Feb. 13, 2026, though half a dozen will assist with the final shutdown and clean up of the plant.

According to the WARN notice, those last six employees will be separated from the company as follows: one on March 13, 2026; three on May 15, 2026; one on April 14, 2026; and the final employee on Dec. 31, 2026.

Bumping rights do exist, according to the notice, specifically for those employees who are members of the United Bakery and Confectionary Workers Local 1718 union.

“However, all employees are being laid off on the same date,” the notice states.

PA Potato Chip Manufacturing LLC is based out of Boonton, New Jersey, according to the notice.

The Berlin facility has a long history in the region. According to records, the manufacturing plant was established in the Laurel Highlands in 1947. It was sold to Utz in 2019, and then sold in 2024 to Our Home, which includes brands such as Pop-Secret, Good Health, Food Should Taste Good, Popchips, You Need This, Real Food From the Ground Up and others.

Utz continues to own the Snyder of Berlin brand and that will not be affected by the plant closure, according to reports.

Starting at $3.83/week.
