Pennsylvania bill signed to require acceptance of cash at school-sponsored events

Legislation requiring the acceptance of cash as a form of payment at school-sponsored events was celebrated at a ceremonial bill signing Monday at the state Capitol.

House Bill 685, sponsored by state Rep. Dan Moul, R-Adams, was part of the education bill in the state budget, signed into law by Gov. Josh Shapiro in November.

The governor presented Moul with a signed copy of the bill at the ceremony.

Many schools across the Commonwealth had been rejecting cash as a form of payment for school-sponsored events and activities, instead requiring spectators to use credit or debit cards, or order online or through an app.

“Many have expressed relief that they can now use cash to pay for tickets to their child or grandchild’s ballgames and activities and are no longer at risk of being shut out,” Moul said. “It made no sense to me that the legal currency of the United States wasn’t permitted for ticket purchases to school events.”

Moul introduced his bill in March after the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association rejected his request to restore a cash option. The PIAA eventually changed its policy, but Moul’s bill made it law.
