Hollidaysburg Area School Board elects president
Bilek re-elected to serve in post for second term
HOLLIDAYSBURG — Hollidaysburg Area School Board member Carmen Bilek was re-elected as board president during a Wednesday night meeting, securing her leadership position for a second, one-year term.
Hollidaysburg Area, like all other public school districts in Pennsylvania, holds annual reorganization members in December or January to induct new members and select board officers for the coming year.
Board member Ying Li advanced Bilek as the sole nominee for the presidency position, which was approved unanimously under the temporary president Kenneth Snyder.
Missy Sullivan was unanimously approved to serve as vice president. No other board members were nominated for either position.
Snyder also swore in the three new board members — Cara Eardley, Jesse Blank and Joseph Antonowicz — for four-year terms, replacing outgoing members Ronald Sommer, Scott Brenneman and Jennifer Costanza.
Bilek said she was “very grateful and very appreciative” for the board’s trust in allowing her to continue as president.
In other business, the new board unanimously approved a resolution affirming its commitment to not raise taxes in the coming 2026-27 academic year above the Pennsylvania Department of Education set limit of 4.2% of the current effective millage.
As part of ongoing efforts to update curriculum offerings district-wide, the board approved two new courses in French and geology and comprehensive updates to three arts classes, plus an expanded oceanography course.
Assistant Superintendent Tracy Boone, who is responsible for academic standards across the five-school district, explained that a number of interested students had prompted administrators to expand the ocean studies class from a one-semester elective to a full-year course.
Several Hollidaysburg students are hoping to pursue degrees related to ocean science, Boone said, so the district is happy to accommodate their academic interests.
