Altoona man arrested for sexual assault
A city man is behind bars after allegedly sexually assaulting two teenage coworkers at the restaurant where they all worked.
Justin Tyler Nunamaker, 28, was arraigned Tuesday by Magisterial District Judge Benjamin F. Jones on single felony counts of aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors, a misdemeanor count of indecent assault, two summary counts of harassment and a summary count of public drunkenness. He was remanded to the Blair County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail.
The charges stem from a weekslong investigation by Altoona police began after Nunamaker’s 17-year-old male coworker accused him of being intoxicated and sexually assaulting him during their shift at the Old Carolina Barbecue in late October, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
The victim said Nunamaker tried to kiss and grope him several times during work hours and would leave the restaurant to buy beer at Sheetz. He told officers Nunamaker gave him a metal rod and asked the victim to “sodomize” him with it, the police report stated.
Nunamaker also allegedly picked up the victim before touching him underneath his clothing. Further investigation showed that Nunamaker was accused of repeatedly harassing an 18-year-old female coworker by trying to hug her during the same shift. The female victim was forced to hide in the bathroom to avoid Nunamaker, the report stated.
Officers noted that the victims’ allegations were corroborated by the restaurant’s security footage. They also noted that Nunamaker messaged the male victim the day after the alleged assault and apologized for his actions. He then asked the male victim to not quit his job, the report stated.
According to the affidavit, the restaurant manager was aware of Nunamaker’s intoxication but said “they needed the help” because of his “physical limitations.” However, the manager said they didn’t know Nunamaker was assaulting coworkers until he was notified by the victims’ parents, the report stated.
Nunamaker is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in front of Jones on Dec. 17.
