Altoona man held in attempted robbery, theft of bucket truck

Gray charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, DUI

A city man is behind bars after attempting to rob a man running cable from a bucket truck and attempting to take the truck while the victim was still suspended in the air, according to Altoona police.

Dwight Louis Gray Jr., 41, was charged with two counts of felony aggravated assault along with misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and DUI. He also faces summary charges related to public drunkenness after the Monday evening incident.

According to police, the victim was running cable on the 1100 block of 15th Avenue about 6:22 p.m. when Gray ordered him to come down from the bucket, empty his pockets and show his identification. When the victim refused, Gray threatened to “empty the clip on him.”

Gray then got into the truck and attempted to drive away while the victim was still suspended about 30 feet in the air, police reported.

When Gray was unable to move the truck, he climbed about halfway up the boom in an attempt to reach the victim, but climbed back down and fled the scene in his own vehicle.

Police located a vehicle matching Gray’s SUV and, as an officer pulled behind the vehicle, Gray exited from the driver’s seat, approached the officer and asked why they were harassing him, the report states.

At this time, it was clear Gray was under the influence of alcohol, and he was taken into custody, police said.

Gray was arraigned Tuesday afternoon before Magisterial District Judge Andrew L. Blattenberger. Unable to post $40,000 bail, he was remanded to the Blair County Prison.

His preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 7 before Magisterial District Judge Benjamin F. Jones.

Starting at $2.99/week.
