State budget brings Williamsburg Community School District relief

State funds in process of being released to school district

At Tuesday night’s meeting, Williamsburg Community School District Superintendent Lisa Murgas said the school board “feels good” about the recently passed Pennsylvania state budget.

The board is expecting to receive $51,000 more than what they received last year, according to Murgas.

“It’s always good to have an increase in funding, so we’re appreciative of that,” she said.

Business manager Kalie Zabrosky told the board that these funds are “in the process” of being disbursed to the district.

What the board was not anticipating was changes to the school code after the budget was passed, Murgas said.

In a 21-page packet, numerous school policy changes were passed within the Senate Bill 315, which included increased education funding and cyber charter school reform.

Murgas highlighted a few policy changes, such as altered guidelines for students interested in transferring to a cyber charter school.

The new Pennsylvania code states that if a student with more than three unexcused absences chooses to leave a brick-and-mortar school for a cyber charter school, that student is not permitted to transfer “unless a judge (allows) them to do that,” Murgas said.

The district has yet to receive procedural information concerning the policy change.

Including all of the new cyber charter reform efforts found in the school code legislation, Murgas said the district will be saving at least $25,000 a year.

Another policy change is that the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association will only accept cash for admittance to school-sponsored activities.

According to the school code packet, a school can refuse to accept a payment if it “significantly” exceeds the set fee for an event. Payment options in addition to cash may also be accepted.

Discussing the code’s meaning, Murgas believes the public doesn’t have to purchase a ticket online, but if they decide to buy a ticket at the door, they must give the exact amount.

Members Patricia Kensinger, Louis Brenneman and Carlee Ranalli ended their board terms Tuesday night.

Christina Neri, Jay Detwiler and Billie Jo Greaser will join the board at their reorganization meeting set for Dec. 2.

Starting at $2.99/week.
