Atloona duo charged with retail theft taken into custody

Hetrick, Bastian arraigned Friday on felony counts

Two city residents accused of shoplifting at Boscov’s were taken into custody after a search by police also turned up drugs and related paraphernalia.

Edward Joseph Hetrick, 39, and Shawnna Marie Bastian, 31, were arraigned Friday by Magisterial District Judge Andrew L. Blattenburger on single felony counts of retail theft and conspiracy to commit retail theft, as well as a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Hetrick was also charged with a misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance, while Bastian faces a summary charge of public drunkenness and similar misconduct.

Hetrick was remanded to the Blair County Prison with bail denied due to having “16 criminal cases within the 22 months, including resisting arrest, false ID and flight,” online court documents state. Bastian was remanded to the prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Logan Township police were dispatched to Boscov’s at 139 Falon Lane about 5:16 p.m. Thursday for a retail theft. On scene, Boscov’s loss prevention employee told officers that two individuals, later identified as Hetrick and Bastian, had taken about $150 worth of clothing from the store, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

The employee said they approached Hetrick and Bastian on the sidewalk outside the store and instructed them to remove the unpaid merchandise from their bags. The employee was able to recover all of the stolen items, but said Hetrick and Bastian refused to return to the store to identify themselves and fled the parking lot, the report stated.

Altoona police located Hetrick and Bastian outside of the Barnes and Noble bathroom, where they were allegedly discussing the items they had stolen, the report stated.

A search of Hetrick’s person yielded two used needles, an empty white stamp bag, a small plastic bag containing suspected marijuana and a blue stamp bag containing a white powdery substance, while a search of his backpack turned up wrapping papers, a plastic pipe with residue and a bottle cap with residue, the affidavit stated.

When officers searched Bastian, they found two used needles. Bastian told officers she had taken heroin and EMS were called to the scene. A search of Bastian’s backpack turned up a plastic bag of suspected marijuana. While Bastian was transported to UPMC Altoona, Hetrick was taken to the Logan Township Police Department, the report stated.

After reviewing the pair’s criminal history, officers found that they both had two prior convictions for retail theft, according to the affidavit.

They are both scheduled for preliminary hearings in front of Magisterial District Judge Matthew Dunio on Dec. 4.
