Altoona man’s bail denied in alleged assault

A city man with a criminal history of assault is behind bars without bail after allegedly strangling a woman.

Joshua Adam Shaw, 35, was arraigned Saturday before Magisterial District Judge Andrew L. Blattenberger on a felony charge of strangulation, misdemeanor charges of unlawful restraint and simple assault and a summary charge of harassment.

Court documents state that bail was denied because Shaw is on probation until 2030 and has an extensive history of fleeing and resisting arrest, and it is believed he will not comply with bail conditions.

Altoona police were dispatched in the early morning hours of Saturday to a home on the 600 block of North Third Street for a physical domestic.

The victim said there was already a physical altercation between Shaw and another man late Friday night, just hours before the assault, court documents state. The victim said when she returned home from being with friends, Shaw, who was drinking alcoholic beverages, demanded to look through her phone. He became more aggressive with the victim and began throwing her around the room by her hair and shoving her, according to the report.

At one point, he threw her on the bed, got on top and grabbed her throat, choking her. The victim scratched at Shaw’s face to defend herself and was able to run to the kitchen, where the front door is located, but he pulled her back into the home, the victim said.

He also grabbed and smashed the victim’s phone, but once the phone was on the ground, the victim was able to grab it, run to the bathroom and call for help, police reported.

Shaw was remanded to the Blair County Prison. His preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 12 before Magisterial District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio.
