Planned nursing home strike by SEIU postponed

Nursing home workers represented by SEIU Healthcare PA have postponed a three-day strike for alleged unfair labor practices against New Jersey-based West Valley Health that had been scheduled for Tuesday, and will instead begin negotiating with the company Thursday, as the firm had suggested upon the strike notice being issued last week.

The union has accused the company of refusing to negotiate in good faith on a wage reopener that came into play Aug. 1, with potential new wages beginning a month later, as the firm had canceled two sessions that it had scheduled itself.

In its response to the strike notice, the company complained that the union was in violation of a “no-strike, no lockout” provision in the contract and that the firm had to defer negotiations until after the Jewish holidays, which end Oct. 14.

Both parties had claimed they were willing to negotiate.

The eight nursing homes where workers were prepared to strike include Haida Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Hastings.

Two other nursing homes were planning an informational picket.

Starting at $3.83/week.
