Former Blair County attorney Cohen sentenced to 5 years of probation in Bedford case

A former Hollidaysburg attorney was sentenced to five years’ probation after pleading guilty to a felony count of failure to make required disposition of funds in Bedford County Court on Monday.

Michael B. Cohen, 42, must spend the first six months of his probation on house arrest and pay $10,000 in restitution to the victim, defense attorney Daniel Kiss said. Cohen faced a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.

Senior Judge Patrick T. Kiniry presided over sentencing, with Senior Deputy Attorney General Megan McGoron as prosecution.

In 2022, the victim chose Cohen as his attorney for a property issue and gave him $60,000 toward resolving the problem, according to McGoron. Cohen then deposited $50,000 into a different bank, leaving $10,000 “unaccounted for.”

The victim subsequently lost his home and possessions, she said, requesting that Cohen pay $10,000 in restitution.

That same year, Cohen told police officers that he believed he was losing his mind and stopped going to work, a criminal complaint states. He lost his law license in April 2023 after being disbarred on consent.

Cohen has three pending Blair County cases. Two are slated for jury trials while he is being sentenced in the third on Dec. 12. He is also scheduled for sentencing in Johnstown federal court on Nov. 18 after pleading guilty in July to two charges of forgery.

He remains free on unsecured bail.
