Virginia man faces charges of kidnapping 2 children from Logan Township home
Harris alleged to have forcibly taken pair from home, fled police
A Virginia man is behind bars in Blair County after allegedly kidnapping two juveniles Saturday afternoon.
Brandon Michael Harris, 37, of Virginia Beach, was arraigned Sunday morning before Magisterial District Judge Paula M. Aigner on nearly two dozen charges related to the incident in which he forcibly removed the two children from a Logan Township residence shortly before 1 p.m., state police reported.
The children’s mother attempted to stop Harris and when she was unsuccessful, begged Harris to let her into the vehicle so the children were not alone, the report states.
Police were notified of the kidnapping and caught up with Harris on I-99 south, near the Plank Road exit. Harris was driving a black Nissan Titan truck, police reported, and troopers made multiple attempts to stop the vehicle.
Police pursued Harris over 20 miles through Blair and Bedford counties at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Harris struck a marked state police patrol vehicle and exited I-99 southbound at the Saint Clairsville/Osterburg exit in Bedford County, state police reported.
The truck then came to a stop in the middle of the road as multiple troopers approached the vehicle, opened the doors and removed Harris, who was in the front passenger seat.
The mother and children were safely removed from the vehicle and police found Julian Christian Harris, 31, of Baltimore, Md., in the driver’s seat.
During the investigation, police learned that Julian Harris switched seating positions to help Brandon Harris avoid getting charged, the report states.
Police said all of the vehicle’s airbags were deployed due to the vehicle striking objects and the state police cruiser.
The mother and children were treated and released from a local hospital; no other injuries were reported.
Brandon Harris is being held in the Blair County Prison on $350,000 bail. His charges include two felony counts of kidnapping a minor, two felony counts of endangering the welfare of children, a felony count of assault of a law enforcement officer and a felony count of fleeing police. In addition, he faces five misdemeanor charges of recklessly endangering another person, misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and obstruction of justice, and summary traffic violations related to the chase.
His preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 18 before Magisterial District Judge Matthew Dunio.
Julian Harris was arraigned Sunday before Aigner on a felony charge of conspiracy fleeing police and remanded to prison after being unable to post $75,000 bail.
His preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 17 before Dunio.
