Jury chosen to hear Blair County couple’s child sex abuse case

Trial slated to begin Oct. 14 for William, Marie Stonebraker

HOLLIDAYSBURG — A jury was seated Monday to hear the criminal charges in the combined cases against a Blair County couple accused of child sexual abuse.

William John Stonebraker, 55, and Marie Louis Stonebraker, 43, are scheduled for a joint, four-day jury trial starting Oct. 14 at the courthouse.

They each have two cases against them and are facing hundreds of felony charges, including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of children and aggravated indecent assault.

The couple have remained free on bail while their charges have been pending.

Judge Richard A. Lewis III of Dauphin County presided over the proceedings, where a jury of 12 — six men and six women, along with four alternates — were chosen to evaluate charges filed against the Stonebrakers by state police.

To select the panel, Lewis, along with Assistant District Attorney Derek Elensky, William Stonebraker’s attorney Thomas Dickey and Marie Stonebraker’s attorney Phillip Robertson, asked potential jurors several questions, including about any prior knowledge they may have of the cases.

While no potential jurors indicated having any knowledge of the Stonebraker case, many expressed an inability to remain impartial and unbiased after Elensky gave them vague descriptions of the allegations made against the couple. This included being told that one victim was under 16 years of age and the other under 13 years of age at the time of the alleged incidents, while also being informed of the intimidation of a witness charge against Marie Stonebraker.

Each juror who felt they could not remain impartial were questioned at the bench by Lewis and all attorneys.

All those who said they could not remain impartial were dismissed.

Other questions asked of the potential jurors included if they knew any of the attorneys, assistant district attorneys or Pete Weeks.
