An Arizona man with an active arrest warrant out of Texas was taken into custody in Bedford after allegedly shooting himself in the leg and then fleeing from the hospital once police were called.
Jeramiah Demetrius Gray, 27, was arraigned Thursday by Magisterial District Judge Kevin R. Diehl on single felony counts of possession of a firearm prohibited and firearms not to be carried without a license. Unable to post $150,000 bail, he was remanded to the Bedford County Correctional Facility.
UPMC Bedford hospital staff notified state police at Bedford about 7:59 a.m. on Thursday that there was a male, later identified as Gray, in the emergency room with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg. Officers were contacted by staff again about 8:08 a.m. and told that Gray fled the building and drove off in a yellow box truck. When officers searched Gray’s name, they found he had an active arrest warrant out of Texas for an alleged assault, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Officers stopped the truck along U.S. Route 220 North in Bedford Township about 8:16 a.m. and identified the driver as Gray using his Arizona identification card. They reported seeing a hospital wristband on Gray’s wrist and a wound dressing on Gray’s left leg. Gray told officers he accidentally shot himself in the leg and drove himself to the hospital, which he had recently left, the police report states.
Gray allowed officers to search the vehicle, and they found a handgun and an extended magazine containing about 32 hollow point rounds. Officers detained Gray and transported him back to UPMC Bedford for medical clearance, the report states.
Gray is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in front of Magisterial District Judge Tonya M. Osman on July 2.
