The detour of Route 36, Union Avenue, for the Mill Run bridge project in Altoona will continue through October.

The 2.2-mile detour of Union Avenue began Monday, closing the street from Baker Boulevard to 30th Street, including the intersections with Crescent Road and 31st Street.

To get around the construction project, drivers are directed to use East Plank Road, Logan Boulevard and Route 764 (Sixth or Seventh avenues). South of the bridge, businesses along Union Avenue will be accessible from Plank Road to East Ward Avenue with local traffic accessible to Baker Boulevard. North of the bridge, local traffic will be accessible to 30th Street. The detour includes a pedestrian detour using 30th Street, Fifth Avenue, Crescent Road, Oak Lane and Baker Boulevard.

The work is part of the Mill Run bridge project, slated to be completed during the 2025 construction season. Cottle’s Asphalt Maintenance Inc. of Everett is the contractor for the $7.4 million project, which includes the replacement of the bridge, installation of a left-turn lane from Route 36 onto 31st Street (City Street), improved drainage and guide rail upgrades over 4.218 miles of roadway.
