TYRONE — The body of 63-year-old Nancy Weatherly was pulled from the Little Juniata River by first responders late Sunday, near the Plummers Hollow Road bridge, just off Route 453, Birmingham Pike, according to Blair County Coroner Ray Benton.
A man contacted Tyrone police stating the woman was to have entered the water around the Ninth Street pedestrian bridge in Tyrone, according to Facebook posts from the Neptune and Hookies fire departments in Tyrone.
Tyrone police and firefighters went to the area of that pedestrian bridge, but upon not seeing her there, police began searching downstream, locating the Tyrone woman’s body near the Plummers Hollow bridge, according to the Facebook posts.
After firefighters redeployed, two of them entered the water with life preservers and tied-off safety lines, according to one of the posts.
The firefighters determined that the woman was dead, but couldn’t free her from an entanglement, which led to a decision to wait for a water rescue team that had been dispatched from Geeseytown, according to a post.
A boat crew from Geeseytown made the recovery.
Tyrone police are investigating the incident, but provided no additional information when asked at their office Monday morning.
An autopsy is scheduled for noon today, according to Benton, whose personnel were called to the Plummers Hollow location at 10:49 p.m.
Additional information will be available after the woman’s relatives are notified, according to Benton.
A swiftwater rescue crew from Williamsburg also came to the scene, while Huntingdon County water rescue crews were placed on standby, according to Blair County Emergency Management Director Mark Taylor.
Leadership from the Tyrone fire departments, from the Geeseytown Community Fire Company and a spokesman from state police deferred to Tyrone police when asked for additional information.
