Letters of support for 2 municipalities OK’d by Blair County Planning Commission

Blair County Planning Commission members Thursday approved letters of support for two municipalities seeking financing through the Greenways Trails and Recreation Program of the Commonwealth Financing Authority and the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

Antis Township is seeking $250,000 to improve the Bellwood-Antis Community Park. This proposed phase of the project would be to convert the seldom-used volleyball court at the community park into two pickleball courts, add a dog park on the eastern edge of the park property, as well as complete related parking and sidewalk connections.

The City of Altoona is also seeking funding for a park project.

The city has proposed adding a play park along Beech Avenue that would include new playground equipment, a pavilion and parking. The estimated total cost of the project is $344,467, with the City of Altoona providing a match of approximately $94,467.

Planning commission members also agreed to send a letter to the Snyder Township supervisors to reconsider their recent decision not to pay $2,700 to keep Amtran service in the township.

The members also agreed to send a letter to PennDOT asking them to take a closer look at the situation at Stadium Drive and East Pleasant Valley Boulevard in Antis Township to help improve traffic at what they say is a dangerous intersection with traffic before and after school.

“Having a red signal there would improve traffic flow,” member Todd Lewis said.

“It is not a safe situation there,” Chairman Herb Shelow said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
