Woman allegedly stole $700,000

Spencer accused of embezzling from employer over seven years

A Dudley woman is behind bars after allegedly embezzling almost $700,000 from her employer over the course of seven years.

Kristen L. Spencer, 45, was arraigned Tuesday by Magisterial District Judge Andrew L. Blattenberger on two felony counts of theft and single felony counts of receiving stolen property, deceptive business practices, identity theft, criminal use of a communication facility and access device fraud. Unable to post $700,000 bail, she was remanded to the Blair County Prison.

A Roaring Spring officer received a call on March 3 from the victim’s wife, who reported theft from her husband’s practice in Roaring Spring after being informed of the matter a few days prior by their accountant. Spencer had been employed at the practice since 1998 and became office manager in 2018, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

In an interview, the victim and his wife reported giving Spencer a credit card to be used exclusively for the office and practice. The victim said Spencer told him on Feb. 20 that she had taken money out of the card due to her having gambling issues. On Feb. 23 and 24, the victim’s accountant contacted him to report that a large amount of items were charged to his practice’s card that didn’t have anything to do with the practice, court documents state.

In an interview, Spencer guessed she had charged more than $400,000 to the card, according to the affidavit.

Upon extracting Spencer’s phone’s data, officers found several searches of concert venues, resort addresses and concert merchandise, which correlated with unauthorized charges to the card. Recent internet searches also showed Spencer looked up “how many years in jail do you get for embezzlement” and “embezzlement attorneys near me,” court documents state.

On March 14, officers were provided records from the victim’s accountant, which showed that starting in 2018, when Spencer took over as office manager, and ending on Feb. 21, 2025, the total amount of non-business related charges on the card was about $696,250. The number of transactions between those dates was about 5,066, the report states.

Spencer is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in front of Blattenberger on April 3.

Starting at $2.99/week.
