Daughter charged in father’s OD
McGarry allegedly supplied drugs that killed victim
HOUTZDALE — A Curwensville woman was arraigned Monday on charges connected to the drug overdose death of her father.
State police filed felony drug delivery resulting in death and misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter charges against Sami Jo McGarry, 29, for her actions in January 2023.
She is being held in the Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 8 during centralized court at the facility.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed in District Judge James Glass’s office, the victim, Samuel McGarry, 50, was found unresponsive in his bedroom at a relative’s residence in Ferguson Township on Jan. 17, 2023.
This witness told investigators that McGarry was gone all night, but came home about 10 a.m. About 3 p.m., McGarry could be heard moving around in the room. But when he did not come out to eat or use the bathroom, the relative became concerned and knocked on the door about 10:15 p.m. When he received no answer, he forced entry into the room, where he found McGarry deceased in a chair. Police noted that a hypodermic needle was lying on the floor near his feet.
The witness reported that the night before, McGarry had been with his daughter, Sami McGarry, and her boyfriend.
A few hours later, Joanne Greendoner, McGarry’s estranged wife, called police and said he had been with Sami the night before he died. She confirmed he used drugs regularly and thought he would eventually die of an overdose. She stated that McGarry “would not want the dealer arrested,” and always said this to her.
Another witness told investigators that she went to Greendoner’s home after hearing of McGarry’s death on Jan. 18, 2023. Greendoner did not acknowledge her and kept making multiple phone calls. During one of these conversations, the witness heard Greendoner say she knew police found drug paraphernalia and had taken McGarry’s phone. She also told someone that if they could get into McGarry’s Google account, they could “wipe the phone.”
When the witness asked why they would want to destroy the contents of the phone, they got into an argument. Greendoner allegedly mentioned something about protecting Sami, asking “who do you think got it for him?”
This witness did not want to explain how she knew, but she was confident Greendoner knew Sami provided fentanyl to McGarry.
In an interview with investigators, Greendoner explained McGarry, Sami and two others were at her home the night of Jan. 16, 2023. They left about 3 a.m. the next morning with the plan to drop McGarry off at his home.
She was asked if Sami would have provided the drugs. Greendoner responded that neither McGarry nor Sami sold drugs, but if “they saw the other ‘dope sick,’ they would help each other out.”
She told police she was concerned about helping McGarry’s friends and associates so they would not be held accountable for his death. Again she stated that McGarry would not want any dealer prosecuted for providing drugs that caused his death.
When Sami was interviewed, she confirmed she and her boyfriend picked up McGarry at his residence on Jan. 16, 2023, made one stop and then went to Greendoner’s home. While they were together,
McGarry had taken some Xanax that he had with him.
Before taking him back to his residence the next morning, Sami reportedly admitted she gave him a “little bit of heroin because he was getting ‘dope sick.'” She would not reveal the name of her supplier.
She identified a glass amber colored bottle of pills found on McGarry as Xanax. She mentioned he used fentanyl a couple times per week, but would use it every day if he could. She confessed that she was his only source of fentanyl, court documents state.
Another witness, Sami’s boyfriend, told police that McGarry had heroin or fentanyl “from somewhere” that night and Xanax. Although he didn’t physically see Sami give McGarry anything, he thought that because of the way McGarry was acting, if Sami had any drugs, “she would have given them to Samuel to help him.”
An autopsy revealed McGarry died from a multi-drug overdose, but the main drug causing his death was fentanyl.
In April 2023, Greendoner died from a multi-drug overdose of fentanyl and methamphetamine. Both Sami and her boyfriend were at the scene when she was found dead, according to the report.
