Cambria man appears in court in fatal Cresson bar shooting
A Cambria County man accused of fatally shooting an Altoona resident outside a Cresson bar in June was in Magisterial District Court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday after the case against him was sent back down from Commonwealth Court.
Cresson resident Douglas Leap, 47, faces one felony count each of criminal homicide and aggravated assault, as well as one misdemeanor count of recklessly endangering another person in relation to the shooting death of Ambrose Bowers, 31, on June 16.
The shooting occurred in the area of Front Street and Keystone Avenue in Cresson about 11:55 p.m. Bowers was found dead at the scene, said Cambria County District Attorney Greg Neugebauer.
Leap’s arrest was announced the evening of June 17.
Leap previously waived his right to a preliminary hearing in August as his attorney looked to build his self-defense case, but a judge ordered the case back to the magistrate level, according to WJAC.
Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees was one of multiple witnesses to testify during the hourslong hearing. Lees said Bowers suffered seven gunshot wounds — four to his back, one to his side and two to the front of his body.
Bowers’ girlfriend, who was working as a bartender the night of the shooting, said she had to cut off Leap due to his level of intoxication after he had spent hours drinking at the bar. She also said Bowers and another man were at the bar when Leap, getting ready to leave, made comments to the other man and threatened to take the interaction outside.
Bowers’ girlfriend testified that she saw Leap walk up the road while brandishing a gun after Bowers had followed him out of the bar.
Leap’s attorney Thomas Dickey argued that Leap acted in self-defense, as brass knuckles were found near Bowers’ body at the scene.
All charges were bound to the court of common pleas. In custody at the Cambria County Prison, Leap’s bail remains denied due to the nature of the case.
