Great Commission construction OK’d
School cleared to erect new building
Plans to amend an ordinance in Hollidaysburg Borough — which would enable Great Commission School to construct a new building — received a favorable review Thursday by Blair County Planning Commission members.
This proposed ordinance amendment would effectively rezone two tax parcels from Traditional Neighborhood Development District to Conservation Recreation. The proposal for rezoning is for the future development of a new Great Commission School, which would be a suitable permitted use for a Conservation Recreation zoning classification.
Based on available Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Inventory information, an environmental review of the parcels revealed that portions of the land are within the 100-year, 100-year plus elevation and the 500-year floodplains.
“However, there are no immediate environmental concerns with this proposal and the requested rezoning may help reduce flooding within the neighboring properties,” said Emily Evey, community planner.
“We have not received any plans for the development,” Evey said.
Great Commission School officials did not respond to a request for information on the project.
“It is part of the Stowell farm property. The future plan is to build a school on the property; the rest must be kept for agricultural or conservation use,” said MacKenzie Caron, regional planner.
Chairman William Hall said he is concerned development in that area may lead to additional flooding problems in the Gaysport area.
“This was meant to be an extension of the residential area of Hollidaysburg. They will have to deal with stormwater runoff,” member Pat Baechle said.
