A Uniontown man accused of kidnap and assault in one case and attacking a fellow prisoner in another waived his rights to preliminary hearings on Wednesday. All charges against Calvin Jay Huffman, 37, have been bound over to the court of common pleas.
Huffman is facing two felony counts of criminal attempt - robbery of a motor vehicle, one felony count each of robbery of a motor vehicle, kidnap, criminal attempt - theft, two misdemeanor counts of simple assault, one misdemeanor count each of unlawful restraint, theft, false identification and six summary harassment charges.
In the second case against him, Huffman was charged with one felony count each of aggravated assault, assault by prisoner on another and one misdemeanor count of simple assault.
Bail for the cases were set at $400,000 and $200,000, respectively. Unable to pay, Huffman remains in custody at the Bedford County Correctional Facility.
The charges in the first case stem from Huffman's alleged kidnapping of a Woodbury Township man who offered him assistance with his crashed vehicle on April 14. Telling the man that he had a gun, Huffman forced him to drive until Huffman eventually exited the vehicle at a Sheetz in Everett, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
State police were notified of an investigation at the Everett Sheetz while investigating the alleged kidnapping case and reported to the state police barracks in Bedford, where several victims and witnesses were giving their accounts of the evening's events, court documents state.
Police learned over multiple interviews that Huffman was seen entering the Sheetz store alone, where he assaulted two males and a female, according to court documents.
He continued to assault people inside and outside of the store and searched for an open vehicle until police arrived, the report states.
The charges in the second case were filed after Huffman allegedly assaulted his cellmate "in self-defense" on April 24. Huffman told officers that he heard the victim say he was going to beat up Huffman, so Huffman punched the victim first, police records show.
A video viewed by officers appeared to show the victim and Huffman "exchange words" and, as the victim turns and is seen walking away, Huffman strikes the victim in the face with a closed fist.
Huffman was estimated to have struck the victim "11 times in the face with closed fists," court documents state.
The victim suffered a suspected broken jaw, a laceration above his right eye and is missing several bottom teeth.
