A Hyndman woman is behind bars after allegedly throwing her cellphone at her 10-year-old child so hard that the boy required stitches.
Kathryn Elizabeth Laber, 33, was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Brian K. Baker on one felony count each of aggravated assault - victim less than 13 and defendant 18 or older, endangering the welfare of children and one misdemeanor count each of simple assault and possession of drug paraphernalia. Unable to post $150,000 bail, Laber was remanded to the Bedford County Correctional Facility.
She is scheduled to appear in front of Magisterial District Judge Tonya M. Osman for a preliminary hearing on May 1.
The charges against Laber were brought after Pennsylvania State Police in Bedford County were asked to assist Children and Youth Services at 12:21 p.m. Monday with a case involving a 10-year-old child who had been allegedly "struck by a cellphone that was thrown at him by (Laber), which caused him to sustain an injury requiring multiple stitches," according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Officers arrived at a residence along the 100 block of Bluebird Lane in Londonderry Township about 2:50 p.m. and spoke with an adult witness, according to court documents.
The witness said that he, Laber and the child had returned home from church about noon Sunday and that Laber and the child became engaged in a verbal, and then physical altercation, court documents state.
During the physical altercation, the witness said that Laber threw her phone at the child, striking him "in the area of (his) left eye" and causing the wound to bleed. The boy was taken to UPMC Bedford, where he received stitches, police reported.
When officers took Laber into custody, she admitted to being in possession of a THC vaping device, court documents state.
