A Uniontown man accused of kidnapping one person and assaulting several more at an Everett Sheetz is facing more charges after allegedly attacking his cellmate in the Bedford County Correctional Facility on April 24.
Calvin Jay Huffman, 37, was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Kevin R. Diehl on April 26 on felony charges of aggravated assault and assault by prisoner and one misdemeanor count of simple assault.
Bail in this case was set at $200,000 and Huffman was remanded to the correctional facility. He is scheduled to appear in front of Diehl on May 1.
The new charges against Huffman stem from an altercation between him and his cellmate on April 24, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
State police were dispatched to the prison about 10:48 a.m. There, officers spoke with Huffman, who said he left his cell to get a tablet from his cellmate, the affidavit of probable cause states.
Huffman told officers that he heard the victim say he was going to beat Huffman up, so Huffman punched the victim first "in self-defense."
Officers were provided with a recording of the incident from the prison's video surveillance, which showed the victim standing outside of his cell door and using a jail-issued tablet. According to the affidavit, Huffman is seen coming out of the cell and grabbing the tablet from the victim's hand before throwing it into their cell.
Police records show that the victim and Huffman appear to "exchange words" in the video and, as the victim turns and is seen walking away, Huffman strikes the victim in the face with a closed fist.
Huffman was estimated to have struck the victim "11 times in the face with closed fists," court documents state. The victim suffered a suspected broken jaw, a laceration above his right eye and is missing several bottom teeth.
Huffman was already facing multiple felony, misdemeanor and summary charges after allegedly kidnapping a Woodbury Township man who offered to help with his crashed vehicle on April 14. Telling the man that he had a gun, Huffman forced him to drive until Huffman eventually exited the vehicle at a Sheetz in Everett, court documents state.
While state police were investigating the kidnap case, they were notified of an investigation at the Everett Sheetz. Several victims and witnesses went to the state police barracks in Bedford, and Everett Borough police transported Huffman to that location, the report states.
During multiple interviews, police were told how Huffman was seen entering the Sheetz store, where he tackled a male and started punching him. Huffman then allegedly stood up and went to a second male and started punching him. He then went over to a female and began hitting her, the report states.
He continued to assault people inside and outside of the store and searched for an open vehicle until police arrived, court documents state.
Bail was set at $400,000 in that case and Huffman is scheduled to appear in front of Magisterial District Judge Brian K. Baker on May 15 for a preliminary hearing.
