AMED computer system hit by cyber attack

Logan police chief says FBI investigating

AMED is the recent victim of a cyber attack, according to Logan Township police.

The ambulance agency reported the attack to the township department, and the department notified the FBI, which is investigating, Police Chief Dave Hoover said Tuesday.

"Their computer system was hacked," Hoover said.

The FBI has assigned an agent to investigate, Hoover said.

The township department isn't able to do such cyber investigations, Hoover said.

As far as he knows, AMED reported the incident to township police because it was obligated to do so, he said.

Hoover said he could provide no further information in the incident.

The FBI neither confirmed nor denied that it is investigating "any potential cyber-attack involving AMED," wrote FBI Pittsburgh office spokesman Bradford Arick in an email Tuesday.

"The FBI routinely advises the public and private sectors about cyber threats in order to help them guard against the actions of cyber criminals," Arick added, however. "If a business or organization believes they have experienced an intrusion, we encourage them to notify the FBI so we can aid in the investigation if appropriate."

Arick said the bureau provides resources and tips in its Internet Crime Complaint Center website at https://www.ic3.gov/.

AMED officials declined to speak about the situation.
