A city man is behind bars after being accused of raping a woman last year.
Joseph Ronald Lakin Smith, 22, was arraigned Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Benjamin F. Jones on felony charges of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated assault, aggravated assault forcible compulsion and sexual assault, along with misdemeanor charges of indecent assault forcible compulsion and indecent assault without consent.
Unable to post 10% of $75,000 bail, he was remanded to the Blair County Prison. His preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 15 before Magisterial District Judge Matthew Dunio.
According to court documents, Smith is accused of assaulting a female victim on July 21 at a home on the 3800 block of Juniata Gap Road.
The victim said Smith was at the home and made sexual remarks that she "brushed off." When she went to get a drink, he grabbed her and forced her into the bedroom where he raped her, court documents state.
The victim had a sexual assault kit completed at UPMC Altoona and police collected her clothing as evidence, the report states.
During the investigation, police were told about lewd images on Smith's phone and, using a search warrant, police found the images, including photos of the victim.
Police also received a warrant for Smith's DNA, which matched samples taken at the hospital following the assault, the report states.
